Stained Glass Window St Marys Church Cardiff

Stained glass memorial window commission designed and made by Bryn Young for the Russian Convoy Club at St Mary's Church Cardiff.

The window commemorates the valiant efforts by the Merchant Navel Seamen during the second World War. Surviving members of the Russian Convoy Club commissioned the window which measures over 13' feet in height and 4' foot wide. An inscription to the base of the window 'Oh hear us when we cry to Thee' taken from the hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save traditionally associated with seafarers. The main theme of the window depicts a shipwrecked survivor being saved from the sea, fellow crewmen in a lifeboat intern about to be rescued themselves, with Chris the Lord looking over them. Below is the Russian Convoy Club emblem with the lower section of the window depicting a typical scene of a convoy passage through arctic seas.

About Bryn Young

At the age of 15, during school summer holiday work experience in 1978, local glass company 'Monmouthshire Glass' gave me an insight to creative stained glass design. I still remember the fascination and thrill of discovering ancient stained glass techniques passed through generations, that could produce beautiful coloured stained glass windows, which designed and made correctly, could last for hundreds of years to come.

Following that summer, my final year in school could not pass quick enough, I had been offered an apprenticeship as 'leaded light maker' at Monmouthshire Glass in Newport, the desire to master an ancient craft of stained glass, something that I become so passionate for and still today 35 years on.
